Using Polls to Find the Best Time for Game Night
Tired of endless group chat debates about when to meet? Learn how to use tableport's polling feature to find a time that works for everyone.
"When should we do game night?"
If you've ever asked this question in a group chat, you know what follows: a flood of messages, half-answers, changed minds, and eventually someone just picking a time that works for maybe 60% of the group.
There's a better way.
The Scheduling Problem
Coordinating schedules is difficult. Everyone has different commitments, preferences, and constraints. The larger the group, the harder it gets. And text-based discussions are terrible for reaching consensus because:
- Not everyone responds at the same time
- Answers get buried in the chat
- People forget what times were already suggested
- Someone always replies "any time works" (helpful, but not really)
Polls: A Better Approach
tableport's polling feature lets you propose multiple time options and have everyone vote on what works for them. It's simple:
- Create a poll, add the time slots you're considering
- Share with your group, everyone in the event can see and vote
- Collect responses, people mark which times work for them
- Pick the winner, choose the time that works for the most people
How to Create Effective Polls
Offer Realistic Options
Don't add 15 possible time slots. Keep it to 3-5 realistic options that actually work for you as the host. If none of your options work for someone, they'll let you know.
Include Enough Detail
"Saturday afternoon" is vague. "Saturday 3pm-7pm" tells people exactly what you're asking about. Include the expected duration so people can evaluate properly.
Set a Deadline
Give people a reasonable timeframe to respond. "Please vote by Thursday so I can finalize plans" works better than leaving it open-ended.
Consider Time Zones
If your group spans time zones, be explicit about which time zone you're using.
Anonymous vs. Visible Voting
Sometimes you want to know who's available when. Other times, you want honest responses without social pressure. We support both modes:
- Visible voting, everyone can see who voted for what
- Anonymous voting, results are aggregated, but individual votes aren't shown
Anonymous voting is coming soon for groups that prefer it.
Beyond Time Selection
While scheduling is the most common use case, polls work for other decisions too:
- "Which game should we play?"
- "Where should we meet?"
- "Should we order food or bring potluck?"
Any multiple-choice question your group needs to answer can become a poll.
Just Pick a Time Already
The goal isn't to make scheduling fun, it's never fun. The goal is to make it fast. Create a poll, get responses, pick a time, done.
